Who supports fixed, four year terms for the Federal Government?

Support for a fixed election date and four year term spans a broad political spectrum. Below is a breakdown of key submissions made to the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters that is currently considering both of these ideas in its inquiry into the 2025 election.

Supporters of fixed, four year terms:
Australian Democracy Network, Grattan Institute, Real Republic Australia, Rebekha Sharkie MP, economist Conrad Liveris and 4 Year Terms Australia.

Supporters of fixed terms, with no position on three or four year terms:
McKinnon, Foundations for Tomorrow, Democracy Matters, Electoral Reform Society of SA and Canberra Alliance for Participatory Democracy.

Supporters of fixed, three year terms:
The Australian Greens, The Centre for Public Integrity, The Australia Institute and Professor Jill Sheppard.

Supporters of the status quo (i.e. opposes both fixed and four year terms):
The Institute of Public Affairs.

All submissions can be found on the Parliament’s website. Check out 4 Year Terms Australia’s submission and also Conrad Liveris’ submission, which does a fantastic job of outlining the economic benefits of a switch to fixed, four year terms.
